We all suspected this was the case, but John Eastman was dumb enough to write down a criminal conspiracy. While terrorists assaulted the Capitol after Mike Pence refused to go along with the coup plot, Eastman emailed him and said it was his fault the Capitol was under siege, and if he’d go along with the coup, the mob would be called off. He put it in writing.

Repost from last thread,

Here’s the aurora prediction for North America. (Click on the N. America link)

AURORA FORECAST

We have a good shot of seeing the event if the clouds disappear. Unfortunately, up here, the best viewing is usually between 0100 and 0300 AM. And the temp will be about 28 degrees F.

Sunday night is also predicted to be another good night to see the lights.

Every player is amazing, but I’d call out the drummer in the first and the—what is he playing? Bass clarinet? Because I played a bari sax in my HS band it didn’t look like that—soloist in song 2. It was verging on George Clinton territory. Also love the guitar/bass tribute to the studio and Prince. And Ampeg.

Not only is paid family leave an apparently detestable thing in much of America, there are companies who actively guilt their employees for taking earned PTO at all.

Yes. And there are companies that treat all time taken off by employees as their time and not earned by the employees. That is how they come up with the phrase of “stealing time” from said employer.

For some reason I was thinking about that wacko who used to post frequent comments here in the bad ol’ days named ‘taxfreekiller’, and suddenly recalled that he used to post links to “NumbersUSA” … which I wasn’t familiar with back then, but now know is one of the nodes in the Tanton white nationalist network. Back then I was trying out some of the same techniques Twitter is still using now, and I gave him a lot of timeouts and warnings because he would get really out there. I may have even suspended him a couple of times and then reinstated when other people pleaded for it, if I recall correctly. Or maybe that was another wacko.

But nowadays a username like that wouldn’t even make it past the front door here.

Hey folks, this is kind of long but it’s worth a read. It basically gives a background on Glenn Youngkin, the Republican running for VA governor. He’s involved in some, to put it bluntly, weird-ass charismatic crazy.

It’s the Glenn Youngkins of the world who scare the hell out of me. These are the people, who if they came into real power, would have me standing in line at the local gun emporium the next day because these people want to convert all of us to their brand of nationalistic religious crazy.

One of my across-the-street neighbors, on the same floor as me, just acquired a brand-new big screen TV.

The street in question is two lanes in each direction, plus a parking lane on each side, plus sidewalks, plus the setback for my building’s driveway and another sidewalk. This apartment must be 150 feet from me. And I can see the picture on their screen.

OMFG, how big must that screen be? And the people sitting in the same room watching, WTF is wrong with them?

When we lived in Lancaster, PA, that was my first thought, but over several years I realized that wasn’t it. Trick or treat night was never on Halloween (even if Halloween was on the weekend,) and it was often on school nights. I think they might have been trying to avoid actual witches and devils, or maybe the local governments just enjoyed petty power displays.

I’ve got my eye on a PRS SE 245 that would be a slight stretch of the budget but really looks nice. This is the Korean made “Student Edition” but it still seems to get really reviews.

Back in PA churches did NOT want kids trick or treating on Sunday nights. the School Board even had a rule precluding it and anytime Halloween fell on a Sunday kids did the T&T on Saturday.

He put it in writing.

talkingpointsmemo.com

A democratic government that refuses to go after those who actively seek to remove and replace it does not deserve to stand. A Constitutional government’s first duty is to defend itself so that the Constitution and the country’s laws can reign supreme. Else, the despotic government that inevitably replaces it will do so by any and all outrageous and violent means necessary.

This is a war we are in and the Democrats in our government don’t even realize it. The Republicans most certainly do.

A lot of humidifiers specify distilled water, otherwise the minerals in the water create the white film. That can cause blockage of the furnace filter and potentially the furnace. Some recommend special filters or demineralizers to avoid the issue. The ultrasonic units are the worst for this.

Columbus, OH always had a non-Halloween designated trick or treat night. I think it was so the parents could go to parties themselves on 10/31.

My BIL couldn’t get his new 80” tv down the basement steps to his “inner sanctum” so he spent many thousands of dollars having a bulkhead installed that would accommodate it. I suggested instead that he just move his sofa a few inches closer to his old 60-something inch set, but he was not amused.

No. That’s another type of sax. A bass clarinet looks like a really long clarinet but with the neck curved up and then down and the bell pointing up, but the keys are just longer versions of what a clarinet looks like.

Last night’s aurora.

Details:
The aurora formed a faint line in the in the sky shortly after sunset, visible just below the Big Dipper. As the evening went on, it became brighter and arched higher and higher into the night, eventually splitting in two. This photo shows an end of the split arch as seen from the southwestern tip of Iceland. The rock formation just offshore is all that remains of an extinct volcano eroded by the North Atlantic waves.

The custom here is mostly to go around trick or treating before sundown.

Farmers and ranchers will also bring their children into town (trick or treating when your nearest neighbour is a mile away kind of sucks).

Like other places, if “you’re playing,” you turn on your porch light.

I’m not sure we’re going to get many children later tonight, as the combination of freezing rain, rain, and snow will probably keep people indoors.

As for the aurora, bupkis here because overcast in rain and fog.

Urban Halloween, like in old Pittsburgh, was all about kids raising a little hell on their own, and evading any cops or curfews that might be in place. It’s my favorite, because it openly embraces the extortion.

It’s the Glenn Youngkins of the world who scare the hell out of me. These are the people, who if they came into real power, would have me standing in line at the local gun emporium the next day because these people want to convert all of us to their brand of nationalistic religious crazy.

Regarding the article in the tweet:

Wolf in Fleece Clothing, she notes a couple things.

First, I’m comfortable discussing a politician’s religious views.

I’m not.

Religion forms people morally and serves as the arbiter of conscience.

Moral behaviour is an emergent property of evolution by natural selection. Religion might inform political decisions but it does not inform morals.

Politicians should make their religious affiliations known,

… so we can be sure to not elect someone from the “wrong” religious tradition (especially atheists)

including how their personal faith influences the ways in which they deal with difficult issues - and how they themselves navigate their own disagreements with their faith traditions.

I don’t really care how someone navigates their disagreements with their own faith tradition. As for how they deal with “difficult issues,” their actions tell me a lot more about that than their faith.

There’s a contemporary history of doing this in American politics from John F. Kennedy

He was forced to do that by all the conservatives claiming he had “dual loyalties” as a Catholic

through Jimmy Carter and Mario Cuomo …

Jimmy Carter would be a good man regardless, and Mario Cuomo’s religious faith certainly didn’t inform his behaviour as Governor of New York, almost as if past and present actions are a better tool to judge someone’s behaviour than their faith

to Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Same for those two. It’s almost as if “conservative or liberal” matters much more than “religious.”

Politicians who understand moral commitments and the ethical call of their vocations know it is important to address their faith.

So, observing their actions matters much more than their faith.

Religion shouldn’t be a prop to get votes.

Really? Because in this country it always has been. The principal charge against Thomas Jefferson by the Federalist Party in the 1796 campaign was “he’s an atheist, and that’s why you shouldn’t vote for him.” (He wasn’t an atheist, they lied about him.)

It provides an opportunity - and an angle of vision - to reflect on some of the deepest issues with which we struggle.

I do not struggle with moral behaviour.

(He has the seat all the way down, the top of the seat is normally just above the bag.)

I wasn’t prepared for how much harder it is to get your leg over the bike with that on the back. Getting my knee over the seat was easy but now I have to get my foot over the top of the bag as well, which is quite difficult. Getting off the bike is even harder and can result in a fall.

In the case of Youngkin, he’s never held office. His actions are mostly unknown. So whatever’s known about his creepy cult-y dominionist denomination is probably the best available predictor of his future actions.

It’s a hard argument to refute, especially when you consider politicians can stand up on the stump and declare themselves “pro-death penalty” and get all sorts of accolades for such because our society feels killing people out of vengeance is not only moral but in keeping with their selected sky deity’s wishes.

makes sense that it would develop independently and in many places. if you want a war trophy, especially a gruesome, fear inducing one, showing domination over your defeated enemy’s body, you’re not gonna carry larger body parts back home. they’ll rot, carry diseases, etc. (ok the occasional head). so there’s only a few possibilities…

Heads were to too burdensome to carry back from Korea, so Japanese military leader Hideyoshi demanded that Korean and Chinese noses be brought back as evidence of fighting in the Japanese invasions of Korea in the 1590s.

Which is a “cleaner” version of the Biblical battlefield reporting… David (not yet King) had to bring Saul foreskins of the Philistines to prove how many he’d killed (this also meant he couldn’t just use the casualties among his own forces as part of his claimed body count, since they obviously didn’t have foreskins)

When Manhattan announced the mandate, people started trying to bribe pharmacists to give them a card without the shot:

After the city announced its mandate, things picked up. That $500 incentive is pushing people in, too. But nobody is thrilled that they’re being forced to get it… Basically, they come to complain a little and then storm out — or hope that I’ll give them a card without actually giving them a vaccine. That’s happened about five times in the past few weeks. The first person who did this was a man who had a couple of hundreds poking out of the breast pocket of his shirt. He was talking to me, saying, “Oh, I want to get the vaccine,” and then he was pointing at the money. But I didn’t understand because no one has ever asked me that before, and I didn’t think that anyone would. I was absolutely shocked when I realized what he was trying to say. I said absolutely not. After that, some other people came in and hinted at it, offering me money, saying things like, “We’ll take care of you,” or “How much do you want?”…

“F- Joe Biden,” or the slightly less explicitly obscene but no more clever “Let’s go Brandon,” is about much more than political passion or anger. It’s about weaponizing the vulgar dehumanization of our entire democratic - small d - experiment. Joe Biden is not only a person; he is the President of the United States, whether your tinfoil-shrouded conspiracy brain cares to recognize that fact or not. How many times have we heard Republicans sanctimoniously preach about how Democrats don’t “respect” the office of the presidency for such things as President Obama not saluting properly or wearing a tan suit?

Over at sorryantivaxxer.com, poster “Old Bat” pens this tribute to the latest inductee to the Dead Antivaxxer Society!

There was a doctor called Edward
Who spent 8 weeks in a hospital bed ward
With a smile or a smirk
He spread lies like a jerk
Until he ended up deadward.

sorryantivaxxer.com

Dr. Edward Vanek, DO, 63, Atwater, CA, Orthopedic Surgeon. Anti-vaxx, dead from COVID.

According to this article Dr. Vanek died from COVID on October 12, 2021 after an eight week battle in the hospital. Dr. Vanek was a respected Orthopedic surgeon in Merced county California. He had his own clinic in Atwater called Advanced Orthopedics. However, he was an anti-vaxxer, which is concerning not just because of the influence he had on his own patients, staff, and social media followers, but also because the City of Atwater made him the medical advisor for their pandemic response. That’s like the fox guarding the hen house (I think I got that old analogy right).

Leaving his church out of it, it is noteworthy that the most important feature to his supporters is the magic R behind his name and not his record.

I’m not going to say I agreed with the article. I read it more for the information, not for the theologizing, which, considering that the author is a theologian, I expected. What I did not expect was to be reminded of an incident on 9/16/2001 at an Episcopal church I was attending, which, upon reflection, I should have seen as a sign of where things were going.

Basically, I lost my shit when I walked into the church narthex and saw a US flag, folded like a wreath, and hanging from the cross in the narthex. (This was a former processional cross that had been retired to the narthex.) I seriously LOST MY SHIT. The flag got removed after I complained to the pastor, but holy crap. I read the NYTimes back then, I knew a lot of non-Americans had died on 9/11 and this was just hugely offensive to their memory FOR STARTERS. After church, I went over to my boyfriend’s and cried on his shoulder.

Twenty years later, the pastor of that parish moved over to a non-affirming non-Episcopal “Anglican” group because he hates teh ghey. My boyfriend, then a devout Catholic, is now teaching adult Sunday School at an affirming Methodist church. I now describe myself as queer and ace and protest churches on Sundays where I feel like I have the energy. But I should have recognized, five days after 9/11, that the USA was going headlong into a religious nightmare. I didn’t.

Fox News’ Tucker Carlson problem

Distancing won’t work

If they don’t fire Tucker now, they have demonstrated that they are fine with his O’Keefe style “documentary”. And there is no evidence that they truly object to it.

Remember when so many of us here were all so certain that the second TFG’s presidency ended, Melania would be filing for divorce?

You guys, for all the speculation, I think she’s probably just as awful as he is, just as grifty, and we can pretend to analyze their marriage as much as we want, but I don’t see any evidence that she’s in any hurry to leave the grift-fest as long as it’s to TFG’s benefit to keep her around.

Were there any non-white peepo at the insurrection?

Yes, I know of one black man, John Sullivan, from Utah who was at the insurrection. He claimed to be a journalist and you probably saw one of his videos. Sullivan was raised in a white Mormon family. He was such a problem within the Utah Black Lives Matter collective that he was officially disavowed.

Not surprised to see that since a significant number of American Catholics detest Francis and call him a Communist.

Nothing would please me more than seeing Francis sack every last Republican Bishop and replacing them with sane people who won’t march lockstep with the Fascists.

So you’re rescinding these required Florida state vaccine mandates for children in schools: Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Hepatitis B, Measles-Mumps-Rubella, Polio, Varicella (Chickenpox)? Yikes.

Are they actually rescinding all existing requirements or only preventing a COVID mandate?

On the abortion front: this is an excellent opinion piece in WaPo from a couple of days ago. I do not agree with his prescription, that we stay where they were in the 18th century, but I DO agree that we have accepted a right wing framing of the issue that is not correct.

This should be (knock wood) a gifted link.

That I do not believe. They will allow each state to make its own decision.

This tweet from a couple of weeks ago:

… apparently spawned a bunch of people to not believe it was true.

So yesterday Snopes had to publish this:

Did Failed Constitutional Amendments Include Ban on Divorce, ‘United States of the Earth’?

1948: “The right of citizens to segregate themselves from others.”
TRUE

In May 1948, U.S. Rep. Oren Harris, D-Arkansas, introduced a proposal to amend the Constitution as follows: “The right of any number of citizens to voluntarily segregate themselves from others for any lawful purpose shall not be denied.”

Harris, who opposed racial desegregation, was explicitly responding to the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Shelley vs. Kraemer, which had been published just days earlier. In that opinion, the Court had ruled that racially restrictive covenants — which were relatively common at that time and prohibited homeowners in historically white neighborhoods from selling their houses to non-white buyers — violated the Equal Protection clause of the 14th Amendment.

Harris’s proposal languished in the House Judiciary Committee.

Snopes links to this page of a scanned LoC document:

books.google.com

There have been so many proposed amendments. Many of them are bad, some are good, as you can see from that single page also in 1948 the proposal for equal rights of men and women.

Divorce? Nope. Money? Yep! She’s in it for the long haul and as much money as she can get out of him. That became apparent when the story broke about her renegotiating pre-nup or she wouldn’t leave NYC for the White House.

And yes, they are truly awful. And grifty. And self-centered, and…
